In der Englischen Sprache ist es keineswegs neu, dass man das Pronomen "they" auch im Singular benutzen kann.
Beispielsweise dann, wenn man das Geschlecht einer Person nicht kennt:
"Have you Met my friend?" "No, I haven't met them yet." Das klingt eben besser als "No, I haven't mehr him or her yet."
Auch viele nicht-binäre Menschen nutzen "they" als Pronomen, da es eben neutral ist.
Nun die Frage:
Wieso behaupten Menschen, dass man "they" im Singular nicht benutzen kann?
...wenn es grammatikalisch doch vollkommen korrekt ist und auch absolut nichts neues?
The Oxford English Dictionary traces singular they back to 1375, where it appears in the medieval romance William and the Werewolf.
